Research

Blue-headed MacawI work at the interface of evolutionary biology, ecology and conservation. I use a range of methods, including field experiments and phylogenetic analyses, to understand the forces generating biodiversity, shaping phenotypes and structuring the natural world. The main themes of my research are as follows:

  • Understanding the evolution of animal signals and signalling behaviour, and their role in premating reproductive isolation
  • Understanding the impacts of land use and climate change on biodiversity in tropical systems
  • Understanding the impacts of land use and climate change on biodiversity in tropical systems
  • Using genotypes and phenotypes to quantify biodiversity and delimit species units for science and conservation
  • Previous work also deal with behavioural ecology, biogeography and various aspects of conservation and natural history (for a full list of publications, click here).

    Writing and editing

A long-standing interest in rare species and the science, policy and action required to save them from extinction, has led to co-authorship of several conservation books, plus popular articles and editorial work. I still write magazine articles covering natural history and conservation topics in Latin America, while one other project bubbling along in the background is The Birds of Bolivia.

    Photography and sound recording

During the course of travel and fieldwork I have built up a collection of images, many of which have been published in US and European books and magazines. Concurrently, we have both collected sound recordings of birds and mammals, depositing some in the sound archives at the British Museum, London, and others at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, Ithaca. A small selection of images and sounds is included on this website.

    Environmental Consultancy

Previous consultancy work includes reviews of conservation opportunities at Rio Tinto's worldwide mining operations, and impact assessments or mitigation proposals for Asian dam projects.
